The Hidden Waters of Sudüşen Şelalesi

Sudusen Selalesi | The Best of Bursa
One of my favorite characteristics of Bursa is its abundance of waterfalls. Some of the more prominent ones include Suuçtu and Saitabat waterfalls. Slightly lesser known, but altogether just as stunning is Sudüşen (soo-doo-shen) waterfall. Tucked away in the natural wonders of Gemlik, this hidden gem is easy to miss unless you intentionally look for it.

Traveling by car from downtown Bursa to this relaxing and secluded place takes just over an hour. The route leads you through the heart of Gemlik and past gorgeous panoramic views of the bay. Since Gemlik is very well known for their vibrant olive orchards, it was no surprise that everywhere along the drive is teaming with never ending acres of well-groomed trees. The road leading to the waterfall has many switchbacks and due to erosion, a few edges have slid into the lower ravines, so as always drive cautiously. The waterfall itself is situated at the base of the mountains in a narrow valley. The entrance is steep and parking is available, though disorganized and mostly parallel.

The first sight is a shallow riverbed that, during the warmer months, is dotted with picnic tables for visitors to enjoy a meal (provided by the restaurant on site) as they dip their toes into the cool water flow. After crossing a picturesque wooden bridge, a compound of restaurants follows…coffees, ice cream, hot corn in a cup, home-style Turkish meals, oven baked pides and more are available to order. Seating is plentiful outdoors and smaller enclosed areas are available for colder months.

The waterfall is located back even further into the crevice and requires guests to climb a large set of stairs and an unpaved rocky pathway to reach the water’s edge. Sadly, this is not an ideal location for those with physical limitations.

FINALLY we’ve reached the waterfall and it is worth the journey. The sound and smell of fresh water pouring over the cliff is truly mesmerizing.

We were especially pleased with the service provided by the establishment. This writer’s car happened to have a bad battery at the time of our visit and as we attempted to depart, it decided it had finally had enough. The compound owner and his son immediately offered their assistance and jumped our car. A beautiful place made for a nice experience, but kind and helpful people make it unforgettable.
